Microsoft is one of the biggest US companies along with Google, Apple, Amazon, and Facebook according to the statistics of Big Tech companies. Founded in 1975 by Bill Gates and Paul Allen it rose from selling BASIC interpreters to a leading American multinational corporation famed for producing personal computers, computer software, consumer electronics, and various related services for home and business. Its software products, such as the Microsoft Office suite, the desktop operating system - Microsoft Windows, the web browsers, such as Internet Explorer and Edge are used worldwide. Its touchscreen personal computers and Xbox video game consoles are among the leading hardware products. Microsoft has a lot of offices located in different states. Informally the corporate headquarters is located in Redmond, Washington. At the same time, Microsoft headquarters resides in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Microsoft is also known for an extensive certification program that testifies your updated skills and knowledge according to the existing technical requirements and roles. The certifications are mainly divided into 3 categories:

  • Fundamentals: these are the best ones to start with and gain the foundational knowledge in the chosen sphere. You can opt for such certifications even with no prior background by passing only one exam. But note, that these certifications are not prerequisites for the designation of the higher level. Among the certificates you can opt for are the Microsoft Certified: Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900 exam), Microsoft Certified: Dynamics 365 Fundamentals (MB-901 exam), Microsoft Certified: Power Platform Fundamentals (PL-900 exam).
  • Role-based: this category includes associate- and expert-level designations. Associate certifications are intended for those candidates who already have skills in working with a definite Microsoft product. Candidates have to pass two exams to gain such a certification, though some designations require taking only one evaluation: the Microsoft 365 Certified: Modern Desktop Administrator Associate (MD-100, MD-101 exams), the Microsoft Certified: Dynamics 365 Field Service Functional Consultant Associate (MB-240, PL-200 exams), Microsoft Certified: Azure AI Engineer Associate (AI-102 exam).

Expert certifications are the highest level of tech certifications offered by Microsoft. These are designed for those professionals who are eager to advance their skills and get in-depth knowledge of the product they are working with. Candidates have to pass either one or two exams and in some cases, they should possess the associate-level designation first. The certificates that belong to this group include the Microsoft 365 Certified: Enterprise Administrator Expert (MS-100 and MS-101 exams), Microsoft Certified: DevOps Engineer Expert (AZ-400 exam), Microsoft 365 Certified: Teams Voice Engineer Expert (MS-720 exam).

  • Additional: this category includes Microsoft Office (MOS), Microsoft Certified Educator (MCE), and specialty certifications.

MOS designations: Microsoft Office Specialist: Microsoft Access 2016 (77-730 exam), Microsoft Office Specialist: Word Associate (Word and Word 2019) (MO-100), Microsoft Office Specialist: Microsoft Excel 2016 Expert (77-728), to mention a few.

MCE includes only one certification: Microsoft Certified Educator (62-193 exam).

Specialty certifications: Microsoft Certified: Azure IoT Developer (AZ-220 exam), Microsoft Certified: Azure for SAP Workloads Specialty (AZ-120 exam), Microsoft Certified: Azure Virtual Desktop Specialty (AZ-140 exam).

Thus, the certifications offered by this IT giant are divided by levels: beginner, intermediate, and advanced.

They can be divided by the role you will choose: administrator, app maker, data analyst, data engineer, business owner, developer, DevOps engineer, functional consultant, solution architect, to mention a few.

The designations can be chosen by the products you are interested in: Azure, Microsoft 365, Dynamics (365), Microsoft Defender for Endpoint, Microsoft Endpoint Manager, Microsoft Graph, Microsoft Power Platform, Office (365), Windows, SQL Server, Microsoft Teams, and Visual Studio.
