The International Association of Privacy Professionals, better known as IAPP, is the world's largest privacy community. It is a global resource for professionals pursuing careers in data protection and risk management. In other words, IAPP is what brings together the global methods and tools of information management, and the people who put them into practice to ensure the development of the information economy.

Founded in 2000, this nonprofit association has since been a well-established platform for tracking trends, sharing relevant experiences, and certifying and training professionals to further their professional development in the area of information privacy. The IAPP main office is located in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and the association's total membership crossed the 50,000 mark back in 2019.

It should also be noted that this association conducts original research at the IAPP Westin Center to develop a professional direction related to privacy and identify pressing current issues.

Certification Options

The IAPP in the field of information privacy is known as a generally accepted training and certification body. They are in demand because the entire IAPP qualification program is accredited by ANSI (American National Standards Institute) in accordance with ISO (International Organization for Standardization).

Thus, if your professional work involves managing data access, you might consider the following paths:

• CIPP or Certified Information Privacy Professional accreditation is designed for professionals for activities related to privacy practices including data protection regulations, standards, and laws. In other words, the target audience for this certification is professionals who are responsible for information management, human resources, and data management. And given the differences in standards in different regions, this qualification path includes four concentrations such as CIPP / US for the US, CIPP / E for Europe, CIPP / C for Canada, and CIPP / A for Asia.
• CIPM or Certified Information Privacy Manager accreditation is designed for a group of privacy professionals who understand how to implement key information privacy rules into day-to-day duties. Thus, this qualification opportunity will be necessary for candidates involved in auditing, risk management, analytics, and various privacy-related operations.
• CIPT or Certified Information Privacy Technologist accreditation focuses on privacy engineering and various technologies for implementing key data protection practices in services and products. As a result, the target audience will be privacy professionals by design, software engineering, and information security.

At the same time, additional certifications have been developed:

• Privacy Law Specialist designation focused on certifying U.S. lawyers who have passed the rigorous IAPP evaluation and can prove their specialization in privacy law.
• FIP or Fellow of Information Privacy accreditation is necessary for candidates if they want to prove their comprehensive knowledge of privacy laws and skills in managing programs and basic data protection techniques. To do so, the professional must already have a CIPP certificate designed for his or her region, as well as a CIPM or CIPT qualification. Moreover, be sure to document your three years of experience when at least 50% of your responsibilities were related to data privacy.

While the IAPP offers a plethora of comprehensive courses in a variety of delivery formats, this does not preclude the need for additional training tools. This is also where IAPP can help.
